"Woah... the wildlife here is amazing, Saryn!" Zinah picked a flower off the mountain. "These plants had to adapt to the cold in order to get the rich nutrients under the snow. Amazing!"
Saryn smiled. "Yes, it is. Now, remember, we’re exploring, yes, but keep an eye out for distress. It can be anywhere."
"Okidoki!" Zinah picked up a little ferret. "But isn’t this cute?"
"I guess." Saryn hiked up the cliff. Noticing a shadow in the distance, she focused on it with binoculars.
A red flag.
"Zinah!" Saryn yelled over her shoulder. "A red flag! Distress signal! Come on!"
Zinah shot up. "Got it!"
She air-bent herself while Saryn flew her bird-like mount to the flag. Once they landed, they both let out a gasp.
"My gods..." Saryn covered her mouth.
Crumpled on the ground were hundreds of hunters. Blood stained the snow a dark red. One man was leaning against the flag, blood dripping out of his wounds.
"That man." Saryn pointed in his direction. "He’s still bleeding. He’s still alive. Get your first aid, Zinah."
"Got it," Zinah pulled it out of her bag and rushed over to him.
Saryn inspected the rest of the hunters. She checked all their pulses. They were all dead. Bowing her head and kneeling in respect, Saryn thought to herself, By the great gods, who could’ve done this? These hunters were heavily armed, and they had the training badges of Elites. Barely anyone can beat one, let alone hundreds of them!
She walked over to Zinah and the one survivor. Zinah was calming him as she bandaged his wounds. "It’s ok, sir. I’m the Elemental, and Saryn here is my bodyguard. You’ll be ok."
"We’ll avenge your comrades." Saryn nodded in respect. "Who attacked you?"
"I don’t know, ma'am." He stuttered weakly. "It was just a blur. But I did catch sight of claws, fangs, a tail and raging mad eyes. I don’t know what its intentions were. But it wiped out me and my mates."
Zinah looked at Saryn.
"Where did it go?" Saryn asked.
The hunter pointed to a thin trail of blood leading away. "Right before it could kill me, I shot it. Follow the trail, find it."
"Shouldn’t we stay with you until you’re a little more healed?" Zinah asked.
"No need," he smiled. "I’ve taken worse. Go ahead and fight it. Good luck. You’ll need it."
Saryn started following the trail. "Come on, Zinah."
Zinah followed, leaving the man a thermos of hot water and a mug.
