The Mental Link 5

Yppah stepped back. The flashing in Jakeob's eyes was almost unnatural. He stood up, glaring at him. Unbeknownst to him, Kia had regained slight consciousness as she hit the floor, no longer cradled by his arms.
"You heard me, Yppah," Jakeob said cooly. "I'm the brain here. She needs me. You're just the muscle."
Yppah flew backwards, hitting the wall as Jakeob unleashed a large blast of his magic. And again, and again, and again. Yppah had never burnt so bad. He'd been hurt before, worse than this, but then again, this was different.
Jakeob stopped for a minute. Yppah stood up, shaking, holding the wall for support.
"But you aren't so tough now, are you?" Jakeob tilted his head. "I've never seen you this hurt."
"Trust me, bro- been there, done that, got the t-shirt." Yppah chuckled.
"Covering the pain with jokes." His gaze darkened.
"Isn't that what Kia does?" Yppah grinned.
"Don't."
"Silly old me thought that if I acted like her, you'd stop." Yppah opened his arms. "And yet here we are."
"Don't."
"But you're still giving me the time to catch my-"
"I SAID DON'T!" Jakeob waved his arm, and the biggest blast of them all shot for Yppah.
Time seemed to slow down for Yppah as he watched Kia jump in front of him and take the full power of the blast.
The smoke cleared to Kia, unconscious yet again, crumpled on the floor. Both men realized what they had done.
"Oh gods, no!" Jakeob fell to his knees in front of her body, checking it frantically. "No, Kia, why did you do that?"
She was still breathing, but the force of Jakeob's blast on her already worn-out body was taking its toll.
"Oh, Kia..." Jakeob held her tight, sobbing. "You didn't have to do that."
"And yet she did." Yppah crossed his arms. "Why?"

So about Death's Duty Calls...

I'd suggest reading this before Death's Duty Calls. Hi! Hello. If you don't know this yet I am a real human being, I'm a proud Canadian and I love writing. This play you're about to read, this play right here is mine, and it's based off my interactions with a certain friend. I won't call him out, but he'll know who he is. So yeah. Feel free to use this play. It runs about an hour and a half in length. The word use is fairly basic , but some of the themes addressed in the play are PG13 ( drinking, intimacy, homosexuality and abuse to name a few ). I, the author, suggest a high-school level audience and actors . A lot of the characters have loose looks ( looks that aren't addressed in the play ), and some are set. Here's a list of characters. Whatever is in bold  is said in-play, whatever is not is how I see them and is open to change and interpretation. Anything not mentioned is yours to decide. Jeannine "Jay" Moses - Female, h...

Death's Duty Calls, Act 1- The Prince, Part 1- The Kingdom

Act 1 - The Prince Part 1- The Kingdom The curtain rises on a throne room. There is a window facing out to a forest. The window will be moved back and forth throughout the play, but the forest behind it will stay. An imposing man, the king, DANIEL , sits on the throne, looking at his guest- JAY . She wears black clothes, comfortable, fitting her snuggly. It bags at the belt cinched around her waist, and it’s obviously not just for fashion. She has the hardened stance of a killer. The king wears robes fit for his status as emperor, and he is obviously not afraid of Jay’s confidence. There is medieval music playing in the background. On Daniel’s right is a tall man, wearing a hood. He is holding a small pouch and a larger bag. DANIEL, leaning forwards - Well hello there, Jeannine. Nice to finally meet you. JAY, slightly annoyed - It’s just Jay. And the pleasure is certainly only yours, King Daniel. Daniel turns to the man next to him. DANIEL- So this is the legendary Jeannin...

Death's Duty Calls, Act 1- The Prince, Part 2- The Fugitive

Part 2- The Fugitive The forest. The window is gone. There is a small camp set up, with a tent on the left and two logs on the sides of a campfire. Daryn is sitting on the log to the left, warming his hands by the fire. Jay walks in from the right, with a bag over her shoulder. JAY- Dragon’s been fed. You’ve got a fire going, bud? DARYN- Yep. I’m not the best, but she’s burning. JAY- You did great. She sits on the other log and opens the bag, pulling out two pouches of rations and two flasks, filled with water. JAY- Are you vegetarian? DARYN- No. ( pause ) That’s a weird question. JAY- That’s because I’m a strange person. ( She gets a blank stare from Daryn and sighs before continuing. ) There’s some dried meat in the rations. DARYN- Oh. Jay hands him a flask and a bag of rations. There is a tense silence between them as Jay munches on dried berries and Daryn takes a dubious sniff of the water flask. DARYN- Jay? Jay looks at him with a bit of resent. DARYN- ...
